Before he knew it, Dean had listened to the album about 10 times while lying down in his bed, each time remembering all the Christmases he spent with Cas by his side. He grabbed it and placed the record on the player. Before Dean realized it, it was December 24 and not one single Christmas decoration was to be seen around the flat.ĭean would remember Cas liked to play Elvis’ Christmas Album every Christmas and he rummaged through Cas’ records and came upon the familiar jolly album image Cas liked so much. Dean still felt the pain lingering in himself and not one day passed where he didn’t picture Cas alive and healthy lying down beside him in his bed. After Cas’ passing Dean decided to rent out Cas’ old flat and move in there along with all his Elvis records. 245 notes Decema short Twist and Shout Christmas ficletĩ months had passed.

Either you don’t recognise that name, or you worship her. There are said to be 12 tribes of Israel and, on reading her novelistic memoirs, I understood that I come from the line of Eve Babitz. At some point I published enough books to be an open book. And though I could most likely “get away with it”, I don’t have secrets any more. I imagined, when he proffered the engagement ring, it would be one of those Victorian acrostic-style bands where a loving phrase is spelled across the gold in gems, but instead of DEAR (Diamond, Emerald, Amber, Ruby), it would spell out “Great Taste In Cock Girl” (Garnet, Topaz, Idocrase, Carnelian, Garnet).īut times and social mores have changed, and I won’t do profiles now because, if the interviewee and I fell for each other, as very occasionally happened, that sort of thing would not sit properly. Just the way that characters are seen as white and thin as a "default," in this book, Chloe exists as-is and isn't ever expected to be anything other than that. But it's really refreshing to just have a character that exists in that way. Most stories that feature fat characters, or characters of color, have a plot that revolves around those identities, and that's great. They're not the focus of the story at all - she just exists in that form, which is so rare. There's no characters treating her differently because of race or weight - those are just things about her, not things to be critiqued. But this isn't a story where Chloe's race or weight or illness are viewed negatively. She is a whole mix of intersectionality - Black, fat, chronically ill - and the relationship in the book is interracial. I loved that Chloe was not just described as being Black. Chloe and Red were so precious and I love the entire Brown family (stay tuned for reviews of Take a Hint, Dani Brown and Act Your Age, Eve Brown!). What can I say about Get a Life, Chloe Brown? Well, I freaking loved it.
